Urso Memorial Scholarship, but also will benefit the women's and men's outdoor sports facilities and Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. We are hoping you can join us to support this great event!
The Thomas C. Urso Memorial Fund was created to honor the memory of local business and family man, Thomas Urso. Tom was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 and lost his battle on March 31, 2004. With the help of his family and friends, they created the Memorial Fund in conjunction with a golf outing to celebrate Tom's memory and to benefit Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Tom would be honored and proud to know his golf outing and memorial fund benefits these children and their families. Our seven year total donation has been over $130,000.
Besides golfing, our father was involved greatly with the St. Xavier Football program for eight and a half years. My brother and I both transferred into St. Xavier after spending our freshman years playing football for Western Michigan University and Olivet Nazarene University. He was always willing to do whatever he could to help the program. We have always wanted to do something special in our dad's memory to benefit St. Xavier. We are always willing to donate, but we wanted to take it a step further. Then we took our cousin to a St. Xavier football game against Marian University. He fell in love with the school, atmosphere and the football program.
We then remembered how exciting it was to get recruited and be told that you could earn a scholarship to play the game we love. That is when we came up with the idea to start the Thomas C. Urso Memorial Scholarship. We figured it would greatly benefit the university, the football program and a well deserving student athlete.
Our first Thomas C. Urso Memorial Foundation Scholarship recipient is Alex Martinez from St. Laurence High School. Alex is a great student-athlete and would make our father proud to have him as our first scholarship recipient. Alex will be a freshman quarterback at St. Xavier in the Fall of 2016.
Our 2017 scholarship recipient is Anthony Saro from Notre Dame College Prep High School. Anthony joins Alex as another great student athlete that would make our father proud on his commitment to Saint Xavier University. Anthony will be a center on the 2017 Cougar Football team.
Our 2018 scholarship recipient is Brian Beran from Notre Dame College Prep High School. Brian will be an offensive linemen for the 2018 Cougar football team. We are positive that he will continue the tradition that Alex and Anthony have set for all Thomas C. Urso Scholarship recipients as not only great athletes, but better people and students!
Our newest scholarship recipient for 2019 is TJ Galligani from Providence Catholic. TJ rounds off our scholarship winners and for the first time we will have a scholarship winner in all four classes next year.
New for the Fall of 2019, we will be awarding a scholarship to an incoming Saint Xavier freshmen female athlete. We will be accepting coach's nominations this Spring and naming our first female recipient this summer!
The Memorial Foundation also raises money to improve the athletic facilites at St. Xavier University for both men's and women's athletic teams. Help us continue to raise money to help these dedicated student athletes. In addition to raising money for Saint Xavier University's athletic programs, the Thomas C. Urso Memorial Foundation has been holding a golf outing for Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation for the past eleven years.
Thank you for your support!
